The spire is positioned in the apse area of the Terraces. At the top is the statue of a martyr saint. The work, done in the 20th century, represents a woman clothed in a rich drapery with her hands on her chest in an act of contrition. Her long flowing hair falls onto her shoulders. Behind her bare feet a tree trunk is sculpted. Italian twentieth century sculpture was the art of innovation and experimentation of forms and materials: several different currents are represented in the Cathedral including Art Nouveau and primitivism, but always permeated by a devout calm which filters the forms, making them more traditional and figurative, as in the case of the martyr saint.
