YOUNG SAINT

North Transept Spire-G49

This spire is located in the north transept, in the area of the chapel of the Madonna of the Tree. On the top of the spire is a statue of a young saint in a proud elegant pose, with his right leg raised as he is taking a step forward. His left arm is resting on his side and is covered by a drapery which goes right up to his shoulder and softly falls down the whole side of his body, right to his feet. The anatomy of the figure is rendered very accurately, he has a thick well-kept head of hair with large curls right down to his shoulders. The sculpture is a copy of the original neoclassical work which was replaced in 1969 due to its poor state of repair.
