In 1387, a year after work had begun, the plan to build the Duomo was entrusted to the Veneranda Fabbrica, an institution that had be specially set up for that purpose by the Lord/Duke of Milan, Gian Galeazzo Visconti.
The Veneranda Fabbrica has been taking care of the Cathedral with preservation and restoration work; it promotes events and cultural projects and educational and informative activities to allow as many people as possible to enjoy and learn about its heritage of art and faith, which is completed and enriched with the Museo del Duomo, the Archives & Library and the Musical Chapel.
The daily activity of the Veneranda Fabbrica is divided between the extraction of marble in Candoglia Quarries and Marble Workers’ Site and Cathedral.
From this spirit of communion and identity that the Duomo transmits, in October 2012 the Get your Spire. Carve your name in History campaign was launched, to raise funds for the restoration of the Monumental Complex of the Cathedral and for the preservation of the 135 spires of the Duomo di Milano. Thanks to the very many donations by private citizens, companies and associations, to date it has been possible to raise € 5.5 million. There is still a long way to go, but the participation of everyone will help to preserve this Monument from the ravages of time and to continue the urgent and necessary restoration work.
