On Tuesday, 25 September, the press conference to announce Assolombarda’s membership in the project “Get Your Spire. Carve your name in History” took place in the Archive of the Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo di Milano, to mark the group becoming a Golden Donor of the Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo.
At the plaque-unveiling ceremony was Assolombarda’s President, Carlo Bonomi, and the President of the Advisory Board of Corporate Social Responsibility, Gabriella Magnoni Dompè.
The Duomo is Milan’s symbol in the world. Child of the tenacious industriousness of its people, the Cathedral is the biggest monument to the Milanese entrepreneurial spirit. It is also for this reason that Assolombarba chose to become one of the Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo di Milano’s Golden Donors, carving its name into the marble of one of the Cathedral’s spires.
“Milan’s Duomo is the cathedral of the people: a shared yet individual work, much like the Milanese’s identity: made up of individuality and the desire to work together as part of the same community that shares specific values. As entrepreneurs we feel the responsibility to invest in our territory also from the point of view of giving something back, taking care of historical and artistic heritage, a symbol itself of the territory but, in broader terms, the culture, the uniqueness and beauty of Italy in the world” – declared President Bonomi.
Assolombarda have “adopted” Saint Simeon Stylites G89 Spire (G63 according to the number system at the Duomo Worksite), placed on the southern side of the Central Rooftop, where many of the over two million tourists to the Duomo visit every year. The statue represents Saint Simeon Stylites and was made in 1811 by Gaetano Matteo Monti from Ravenna, the Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo’s sculptor at the time. Saint Simeon Stylites was born in AD 389 on the border between Cicilia and Syria, and was a Christian ascetic who spent 37 years sitting on top of a column: his strength lay in contemplation.
“Today’s initiative is part of the Advisory Board’s activities dedicated to the enhancement of the artistic and cultural heritage of our city, which is added to the other numerous projects related to social responsibility for the most vulnerable sections of society, such as women and the young” – announced Gabriella Magnoni Dompè, President of the Advisory Board of Corporate Social Responsibility.
The partnership with Assolombarda will allow for the creation of new collaborations with companies and private parties, especially considering the strategical importance that the Duomo has regarding tourism.
“Assolombarda’s participation in the fundraising project “Get Your Spire. Carve your name in History” shows the proximity of the business world to the great history of the Duomo and represents the starting point to form new partnerships with said institutions – from fundraising – that can include many touristic, cultural and digital projects of which we are working on in order to make the Duomo Complex ever more accessible and welcoming” – said Fedele Confalonieri, President of the Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo di Milano.
At the end of the press conference, the video “The building sites that touch the sky” was shown, which was filmed in collaboration with the Experimental Centre of Cinematography – Lombardy Office, and tells an exciting story through images about the everlasting work of employees of the Veneranda Fabbrica in the worksites opened in the last 18 months.
