A special memory

Stories of Donors

I appreciate this opportunity to recall my wife’s and my affection for the Duomo; especially since her Mass and confession here in 2010 was more inspirational and memorable than previous visits; and though we did not know it at the time, it was to be her last visit. (She succumbed to lung cancer on April 8, Easter Sunday, 2012.) But on that last visit, we both had gone to confession, and having finished first, I was kneeling in the foremost pew near the altar when she returned to the pew, smiling and crying.  I asked her why she was crying and she said that her confession was the most wonderful experience in all of her 74 years, and the Duomo and her confessor came together at the most perfect time and place. We have attended Mass in cathedrals and churches all over Western Europe; and have witnessed three different Popes saying Mass in San Pietro; but to my wife, and me, the beauty of the Duomo and the holiness and sincere compassion of the priests combined for a great spiritual rejuvenation in our lives. I have returned to Milan and the Duomo again; and learning of the opportunity to help support the Veneranda Fabbrica’s wonderful work, I have “adopted” the Spires of St. Calogerus and St. Joan of Arc in honor of my great grandchildren, John Calogero and Joan Marie, and in memory of my wife, Joan Marie Brondell.
