Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Spire?
The profile of the Duomo that stands the city and makes it unique, is characterized by its 135 spires.
The spire is a typical element of Gothic architecture. Old spires were of moderate height, not slim, compact and sturdy, and only towards the end of the 12th century gradually it became sharp in the form and elaborate in the decoration.
Only the Duomo of Milan has a large number of spires, one hundred and thirty-five. They rise not only in the foothills around the perimeter, but also on the pylons or lantern, where it crowns the Main Spire, the one of the Virgin Mary. Most of the peaks are 17 m high and are rich in decoration, statuary niches and tunnels.

Why donate?
The beautiful Candoglia marble used to build the Duomo is a very fragile material that deteriorates in the long term due to its porosity. This process is also accelerated by pollution.  The Duomo therefore requires periodic restoration and now, thanks to the campaign “Get your Spire: carve your name in History”, you can help Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo in this important conservation mission.

Requests for certificates should be sent to the address donazioni@duomomilano.it, enclosing the Donor Form.

Yes, regardless of the number of donors who decide to symbolically dedicate their donation to a particular spire, Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo will ensure that all the spires requiring intervention are restored and can therefore continue to adorn the skyline of Milan.
